The Inspector General of Police, Muhammed Adamu , has decried the proliferation and smuggling of small and light arms into the country.
Speaking at the 2019 Annual Lecture/ Award ceremony of the Crime Reporters Association of Nigeria (CRAN), in Lagos, on Thursday, the IGP said that the proliferation of arms is affecting the security and economy of the country.
Adamu who was ably represented by the Assistant Inspector General of Police in Charge of Zone 2, AIG Ahmed Illiyasu, however solicited for Citizens support in fighting criminality, kidnapping and banditry in the country.
His Words: ,”it is of great concern the way arms and ammunition is being illegally imported, smuggled, made and possessed in the country.The police are not unaware of its effect on the security and economy of the country “
He added that, IGP Adamu, inaugurated and lunched Operation Puff Adder on April 5,2019 , as a veritable vehicle and anti- crime machine to dismantle all forms of Crime and Criminality , central to which is , mopping up of all arms and other instrument of criminality.
Adamu also stated that , “police alone cannot achieve these noble goals but through community engagement which is the strategy that i have adopted in combating crime , criminality, ranging from kidnapping, banditry, arms proliferation and so on will be tackled .”
“Everyone of us must know our next door neighbor and neighborhood. The Security of this great nation is the job of all and sundry as we are all stakeholders when it comes to security of this country.”
The police boss however highlighted that the primary role of Police is providing security for the citizens of the country.
He said, “it is well known to us that the Police are constitutionally empowered with the primary and statutory duties , such as protection of lives and property, apprehending and prosecution of offenders including prevention and detection of crime and so all.”
