Ten school teachers travelling in a commercial vehicle to New Bussa in Borgu area of Niger State were involved in ghastly road carnage along Mokwa – New Bussa road at the weekend when the vehicle they were travelling in ran into a broken down truck which was left in the middle of the road.
Two persons including one of the teachers and the driver of the truck died on the spot from fatal injuries while others sustained various degrees of injuries from the crash.
The teachers were returning home after they had attended professional teacher examination in Minna, the state capital.
It was not immediately clear if the examination they participated in was the ongoing nationwide screening exercise directed by the National Teacher Registration Council for all school teachers across the country.
An eye witness to the collision, told our correspondent that the Sharon Space Bus carrying the teachers had collided with the broken down truck which was carrying firewood and log which had suddenly broken mid road.
The impact of the crash left one of the teachers and the driver of the truck dead on the spot and others with fractured skulls, limbs and other body injuries, while many of them are in critical conditions.
Our source said motorists and other road users rushed to the scene to drag out the occupants of the Sharon Space Bus from the mangled remains of the Space Bus.
The injured were rushed to the General Hospital at New Bussa for prompt medical attention. One of the survivors is a former council Chairman of Borgu, Adamu Dodo Osama
The National Teachers Registration Council had recently directed that all school teachers commence nationwide registration for all school teachers in the country.
The registration exercise is a must for all teachers without which a teacher could loose his certificate to teach in any school across the country.
As at the time of filling in this report, the state’s chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, (NUT) was yet to react to the incident concerning it’s members involved in the crash.
