A 44-member organizing committee has been inaugurated for 1st edition of Zenith Bank Akwa Ibom State Principals Cup Competition for Secondary Schools in the State.
The competition which aimed at discovering budding stars in football from the State and nature them to greatness is for male students of age not more than 16 years.
Chairman of the local organizing committee (LOC), Mr. Monday Ebong Uko during the inauguration of the committees on Tuesday said, the football tournament will be participated by over 285 and 300 students from public and private schools respectively across the 31 local government areas of the State.
Uko, who is also the State’s Commissioner for Youth and Sports said the preliminary stage of the competition which will kick off next month in various selected centres across the state, is sponsored by Zenith Bank in collaboration with the Akwa Ibom state government.
He said the tournament is an offshoot of the Akwa Ibom State Youth Sports Festival, is borne out the vision of Governor Udom Emmanuel’s efforts at grassroots development of youth in the state through sports
“The Zenith Bank sponsored Principals’ Cup which we are about to kick off, is one of such initiatives that will go a long way in helping us discover football talents across the nooks and crannies of this great State”, Mr. Uko added.
He commended Zenith Bank for partnering the state government to develop and empowered youths in the state through sports, assuring that the Bank will get dividend for its investment as hidden talents will be discovered and natured to represent Akwa Ibom in both national and international football competition.
The Commissioner charged members of the committees to demonstrate the highest level of responsibility, diligence and patriotism to achieve the objectives of the tournament.
Chief Executive Officer of Hideaplus, Mr. Tony Pemu who is a consultant to the competition assured that proper arrangements have been put in place for the event to ensure success, saying there will be no place for compromise to standards set out for the game.
He said awards which include scholarships and educational materials will be given out to winning schools.
Mr. Pemu also urged members of the various committees set up for the tournament to see their being called to serve in the committees as a divine assignment.
