Governor Nasir Ahmad el-Rufai, of Kaduna State, on Friday,  said that the Nigerian Army (and 1 Division in particular) has always made meaningful contributions to sports development in Kaduna State and the nation.

The State Governor, expressed this at the closing ceremony of the 1 Division Inter-Brigade Sports Championship 2019, in Kaduna.

According to him, “We are all aware that troops need to be mentally and physically sound to withstand the rigours of their duties”.

“The vision of the Chief of Army Staff is “to have a professionally responsive Nigerian Army in the Discharge of its Constitutional Roles”, and physical fitness is an important part of attaining that vision”.

“It is heartwarming and commendable that despite numerous operational commitments, 1 Division was able to organize this Inter-Brigade Sports Championship 2019”.

“The keenly contested events have provided much entertainment. I am sure that new talents have been spotted while known sportsmen and women have improved their skills”.

“The Nigerian Army (and 1 Division in particular) has always made meaningful contributions to sports development in Kaduna State and the nation”.

“Nigerian Army personnel have represented States and the nation in both national and international sporting events”.

He assured that,  “Kaduna State will continue to support 1 Division in its sporting efforts as much as possible”.

“Sports are beneficial to the individual, a soldier trains not only for himself, but also toward the aim of safeguarding the nation and its citizens”.

Accordingly, “Kaduna State truly appreciates the sacrifices that the personnel of 1 Division and indeed the Nigerian Army continue to make towards securing Kaduna State and its people from the scourge of kidnapping, armed banditry and other violent crimes”.

“The Nigerian Army has conducted operation after operation in different parts of Kaduna State, to assist civil authorities toward rooting out violent criminals and creating favourable conditions for socio-economic progress”.

“The State is also grateful for Civil-Military Cooperation projects ranging from medical outreaches to construction of bridges and roads”.

“We have recently received an invitation to a ground-breaking ceremony for the re-construction of a collapsed bridge at Gwanda, along Dogon Dawa – Kuyello Road in Birnin Gwari Local Government Area, on Wednesday the 2nd of October. We will surely be there”.

“Having just watched the football match and Tug-of-War today, I realize how much sporting entertainment I have missed for not witnessing the entire schedule of the games right from Monday”.

However, “What I have seen is ample evidence of the thorough preparation put into the championship by the various brigades. Of course, in any sporting event, there must be winners and losers”.

“To the champions, I say well done, and keep up the excellent work. For the “also-rans”, I encourage you to observe your lapses, re-strategize and work harder for a stronger claim to victory in future”.

“The General Officer Commanding, 1 Division Nigerian Army, invited guests, ladies and gentlemen, on this note, I hereby declare the 1 Division Inter-Brigade Sports Championship closed”.
