The President, Students Union Government at the Federal University of Technology, (FUT) Minna in Niger State, Fajeya Adeji Mathew has appealed to all students of the institution to allow peace to be as normalcy returns to the institution and its immediate community which was thrown into turmoil between Thursday afternoon till mid day on Friday.
And to allow frayed nerves and tension to cool off and simmer, the authorities at the university have ordered the postponement of the institution’s Students Union Government elections slated to have held this Saturday, 28th September, 2019 till further notice.
An ugly fracas had ensued between students of the institution and heavy duty vehicle drivers plying the Minna to Bida road following a terrible road carnage in front of the university on Thursday afternoon involving some of the students on campaign rally and a tanker driver.
A motorcade of students on campaign rally ahead of the institution’s students union election on 28th September, 2019 was involved in an accident when a car carrying some of the students was hit by a fuel tanker.
Some of the students atop the roof of the vehicle during the campaign rally on the road in front of the institution were flung over board as their vehicle was hit by the tanker.
The crash resulted into injuries to some of the students onboard the vehicle beside those who were flung over and fell to the ground.
Following the incident, the ring leaders of the students along with their mates went hay wire and attacked tanker drivers on the road as they hauled missiles on every approaching heavy duty vehicle on the road.
Drivers of articulated vehicles soon launched a counter offensive and attacked the students as they fought back the rampaging students with all means available to them. The fight became a do or die din – dong as mass of the students poured out onto the road and blocked all traffic thereon as the fight raged on.
A massive holdup soon built up on the road resulting on the closure of the road for hours on Thursday till the early parts of Friday when the state government intervened to douse further escalation of violence between the students and tanker drivers.
The President of the Students Union Government at the institution, Fajeya A. Mathew speaking in the institution’s campus radio programme, (Search FM, 92.3) confirmed that no life was lost in both the road accident and from the fracas between the students and tanker divers.
Mathew who was caught up in the cross fire between the students and the tanker divers disclosed that all those who were hit and injured by the tanker and those who were attacked and injured during the fight were responding to treatment at the various hospitals in Minna and Lapai where they were rushed to.
In the meantime, the university in a statement signed by Professor A. Y. Kabir, said the scheduled students Union Government election have been put on hold to allow for calm.
Normal academic activities at the institution are to resume on Monday even as the President of the students Union Government assured that the Minna to Bida road is now opened to traffic and free to all road users.
He also disclose that all the students arrested by the Police during the fracas have been released from detention and that calm has returned to both campuses of the institution at Bosso and the Gidan Kwano as well as the off campus residences at the communities opposite the university’s main campus at Gidan Kwano.
