The recent interventions by the Ogun State Agency for the control of AIDS (OGSACA) is yielding positive results, as the prevalence of the Human Immune-deficiency Virus (HIV) scourge in the State has dropped from 2.9 per cent to 1.6 per cent.

The Executive Secretary and Project Manager, OGSACA, Dr. Kehinde Fatungase made this known during the Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT) organised by his agency at the 2019 Ojude-Oba festival in Ijebu-Ode.

Dr. Fatungase said robust awareness campaign which took the agency to higher institutions of learning in the state as well as Civil Society Organisations was responsible for the drastic reduction in spread of the virus.

“We extended our awareness machinery to high institutions of learning in the State, where we have succeeded in putting an ambassador to oversee the smooth and continuous campaign against HIV. Also Civil Society Organisations have been co-opted to keep the awareness of the HIV virus alive, so that necessary action are taken to prevent its spread”, he said

He noted that the agency had continually engaged in campaign visitations, distributed condoms and other necessary medical materials, adding that, residents in border areas were not left out.

One of the participants at the festival, Mr. Muyiwa Kuku lauded the efforts of the state government for deeming it fit to bring the free HIV screening to the event, noting that it was a good development which should move across the State, to enable more people know their status.

Highlight of the free screening and testing of HIV/AIDS, as well as blood sugar and diabetes, was the distribution of drug to people who needed immediate medical attention, while those with serious complications were referred to government hospital for adequate treatment.
