North West States Outlaw Volunteer Security Operatives

A Joint meeting of North West Governors and Fulani leaders led by the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu has banned activities of volunteer security popularly known as Yansakai with immediate effect.

Governor Aminu Bello Masari of Katsina State made this known while briefing newsmen on the outcome of the meeting held at Government House Katsina said the meeting identified activities of Yansakai as illegal as they have no legal backing to operate.

He warned that the security personnel would apprehend any volunteer found to have been intimidating Fulani in the states within the region.

The Governor ordered the volunteers to immediately surrender all arms in their procession to the police and stolen animals under their custody to leaders of Miyyeti Allah for onward return to their owners.

He also ordered that Fulani herdsmen be allowed to attend markets and other public gatherings without any threat or hindrance.

 Governor Bello Masari assured that Governors within the North-West would provide needed infrastructure that would make nomadic life more meaningful.

According to him, the states in collaboration with the Federal Government would ensure the provision of improved variety of pasture and better breed of cattle for both meat and milk.

On their part, the Governors of Sokoto Aminu Waziri Tambuwal that of Zamfara Bello Mutawalle and their Kano counterpart Abdullahi Umar Ganduje assured that Governors of the Zone would continue to support security personnel in their effort to ensure the restoration of peace for sustainable development.

They said the Governors would ensure that Fulani settled in one place, feed their animals and have quality of education for their children.

Also speaking, the Inspector General of Police Mohammed Adamu who chaired the meeting said the police would continue to partner with the Governors and other stakeholders in the implementation of the resolutions at the meeting.

He warned that the police force will not take lightly with volunteers or repentant bandits found guilty of violating what was resolved at the meeting.

Governors of Katsina, Kaduna, Kano, Jigawa, Zamfara, Sokoto,Kebbi, Niger, Plateau, Kogi  and Taraba States with all Commissioners of Police in the North – West Zone including Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone One, Kano in addition to the top Police officers who accompanied the Inspector General of the Police attended the meeting.
