Newly appointed Senior Special Assistant on Media to Governor Bala Mohammed in Bauchi, Mukhtar Gidado has assured that he will do everything humanly possible to protect the integrity and interests of Nigerian journalists.
Accordingly, Gidado said, he will demonstrate high sense of responsibility and professionalism so that the confidence and trust the governor and journalists have in him will not be in vein.
Alhaji Mukhtar Gidado was speaking while receiving Executives of Correspondents’ Chapel, Bauchi state council of the NUJ during a congratulatory visit to his office led by the chapel chairman, Segun Awofadeji.
Gidado added, “I must say that I’m committed and ready to demonstrate my determination so that we can excel as one of the best SSA to His Excellency in Bauchi state”.
He told the correspondents’ chapel chiefs that journalists have social responsibility to ensure that the security and sanctity of Bauchi state and Nigeria remains sacrosanct.
Bauchi SSA therefore stressed the need for the journalists to practice in consonance with the ethics of the profession, devoid of sentiments or bias, and any form they feel will not infringe the constitutional provisions of the Union and its code of ethics.
He charged members of the correspondents’ chapel to adhere strictly to the provisions the NUJ Constitution bestowed on them, as well as go for training and re-training so as to excel in the practice of the journalism profession.
“Let’s draw a line to chart a new course, a course for posterity and consolidation, it is with all of you that we can move Bauchi state and the profession of journalism forward”, Gidado said.
Gidado also called for the support, cooperation and goodwill of all journalists, stressing “We need to be together, for if you leave me alone to fail, the claim by H.E to have one of you as SSA would have crash-landed.
He advised journalists not to allow rumour mongering to discredit their colleagues, pointing out that, “If I succeed, it’s not only Mukhtar Gidado that succeed, it’s the journalists of Bauchi state and by extension the entire journalists of Nigeria”.
The SSA emphasized the need for members of the Correspondents’ chapel to put heads together with the state council of the Union to checkmate the excesses of quackery in the profession.
According to him, his office has drawn up a comprehensive being tailored to improve the welfare of working journalists, saying we itemized some important projects for the entire journalists in the state”.
“Good tidings are on the way for journalists in Bauchi state, what we need from you is a little patience. Things will be better for each and every one of you”. Godado assured journalists.
The chapel chairman, Segun Awofadeji has earlier spoke of the need for journalists for putting hands together to sanitize the profession against quackery.
“Our mission is bring sanity in the system”, Awofadeji said, however expressing regret that quacks have to a large extent bastardized the profession of journalism.
He congratulated the new SSA, urged him to restore the lost glory in the profession, and prayed that God will give him the wisdom, knowledge and experience to steer the affairs of the office.
Segun also urged for synergy to make a difference in consonance with the dictate of the ethics of the profession, saying they will portray gospels of the government to the public.
