The transition committee set up by the Zamfara State Governor, Dr Bello Mohammed has recommended the immediate suspension of the Zamfara State University, Talata Mafara due to the lack of capability of the state to sustain the institution.
This was part of recommendations contained in the Interim Report of the committee submitted to the governor today at the Government House, Gusau.
Presenting the Interim Report, the chairman of the committee, Malam Ibrahim Wakkala Muhammad said though Zamfara state is the only state university but that does not mean that the state will go ahead to establish a university.
The transition committee said it now discover over N300 bn debt incurred by the previous administration of Abdul’Aziz Yari Abubakar and therefore the state at this critical moment cannot and will not be able to maintain a university.
“Presently, there is admission process going on in the university despite no Vice Chancellor and Registrar. How can such institution be a good one to produce quality education to the students”, he said.
The transition committee also ask for the immediate reintroduction of Sharia legal system to checkmate the current the current social ills in the state.
Wakkala said the reintroduction of the Sharia legal system will go a long way in improving the behavior of the people.
“Most of the current ills such as killings, cattle rustling, kidnappings going on in the state are as a result of the people not adhering to the teaching of the Islamic religion”, he said.
The committee recommends the investigation of the appointment of 14 new Permanent Secretaries by former governor Yari few days before the expiration of his tenure.
The committee also urged the new government to be releasing 10 percent counterpart funds to international donor agencies which the previous government refuse to do.
The report also touched on contract payments when such contracts were yet to be done and the need for the new government to set up judicial commission of inquiry.
The committee commended the previous administration for completing projects it inherited and advised the new government to also completed good projects left by the Yari administration.
Receiving the report, governor Bello Mohammed promised to look into the recommendations with a view of implementing the recommendations as it has now given the government direction.
It will be recalled that the Yari led All Progressive Congress (APC) administration had established a state university which is located in Talata Mafara, the home town of former governor Yari.
