A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State, Mr. Rotimi Ajanaku on Monday attributed the increasing rate of kidnapping in the Southwest states to ‘quick rich syndrome’ arising from poor wages of the civil servants and huge budgetary allocations to political office holders.
Speaking with journalists in Ibadan, the APC Chieftain said the urge to break the poverty line by the children of the poor, and neglect of the youths with attendant high cost of attaining educational qualifications, were responsible for the surging crime rate.
“Without any doubt, we all know that security of lives and property constitutes the fundamental purpose of government, but we find it very disturbing that kidnapping for ransom which is now a critical part of the evolution of crimes in Nigeria is a direct threat to the constitutional right to live and freedom of movement of the people.” he
Mr Ajanaku added, “our leaders should stop pretending as if they are ignorant of the causes of the state of insecurity we find ourselves in Nigeria today,”
” Would they claim ignorance of the rising youth unemployment, or the failure of the government to curb the challenge through holistic revamping and transformation of the critical sectors.Others are the poor state of infrastructural facilities across the country that create high tendency for poor standards of living, the increasingly budgetary allocation and other financial considerations attributable to some sector that are not judiciously utilized to effectively upturn situations and efficiently address the prevailing security challenges bedeviling the country?
The APC Chieftain stressed, “what of the unaccountably and questionable security votes, poor wages to civil servants, inability of the civil servants to afford their children school fees, especially with high school fees attached to higher institution. Of course the socio-economic and political effects of these in the country is worrisome, shameful and disturbing.”
“I am appealing to both the legislative and judiciary institutions to pass into law  a bill that will award tough or even capital punishment for kidnapping and terrorism without fear or favour.” “Kidnapping should be handled in same way as murder.
” Government should organize seminar and workshop for security agencies on crime prevention, especially with emphasis on kidnapping that is now seeing as easy means of turning millionaires overnight. There also should be good incentive system for the security personnel to serve as a means of encouraging them to offer their very best.
In a related development. the APC Chieftain has promised to ease market women of the tension they pass through to raise fund for their trades and also called on politicians and business executive to give back to the society.
He made the promise while speaking  at the wedding ceremony between Ayomide Okunola and Tolulope Bankole, a daughter of a renowned and influential member of Apata Market Women Association, Mrs. Adepoju Bankole, popularly known as ‘L’ori Amala or Iya-Oloye’ held at the weekend.
“I want our successful politician and business executive to emulate Otunba Godwin Sotilewa Osifeso, Gbobagunte of Ijebuland and his friends in America who through their organization in Nigeria, Yoruba Progressive Foundation gave “interest-free” loan that runs to several millions to Lafenwa and other Markets’ Women, in Ogun State. It is another way of reducing crime in our society. I have also promised to adopt the project and I will kick start it with the markets’ women in my constituency and Ibadan in general.
Ajanaku also advised all fathers to give good attention to their children, especially girl-children who he described as tomorrow’s wives and mothers. He stated this while responding to the award recently presented him as an Outstanding Father of The Year by the New Heritage Baptist Church, Eniosa, Ibadan in celebration of this year’s fathers’ day.
The APC Chieftain expressed displeasure at the attitude of some leaders to projects on girl-children, saying ” we needn’t to be their father before helping them. Those girls you fail to help may end up giving birth to rascals, miscreants, armed robbers, or even kidnappers that will tomorrow destroy lives and property you laboured for in your life. Why not give the support now to safe their future and that of your children,”.
