Counsels to the incumbent Bauchi State Governor, Bala Abdulkadir Mohammad and ex-Governor Mohammed Abubakar at the elections tribunal have commended the tribunal for exhibiting high level of commitment to the assignments before it.
They made the commendation in an interview shortly after the court’s third sitting held on Monday on the petitions filed by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the former governor of the state Mohammed Abubakar, the People’s Democratic Movement (PDM) and its candidates Ahmed Iliyasu against the victory of Governor Bala Mohammed of the PDP in the last elections.
It could be recalled that the APC has condemned the February 23, 2019 governorship elections over alleged rigging, while the PDM wrote a petition to the tribunal against the commission of its logo on the election ballot papers.
PDP counsel led by Chris Uche (SAN) have requested the court to strike out the APC petition on the ground that its candidate and former governor allegedly conceded defeat and congratulated the present governor after the announcement of the election results, but later reversed his decision and came to the tribunal challenging the election.
“If the former governor had done that, he ought not to come to the tribunal with this petition. So that motion is something we are going to contend in the court in the next adjourned date”, Counsel Chris Uche said
Also speaking, the APC lead counsel Mamman Mike Usman (SAN) said they expected the pre-hearing session to hold on Monday 17th but was adjourned following a motion filed by the dependents.
Counsel Mike Usman lamented that the motion filed by the PDP lawyers was not done in right manner as it was allegedly filed on Sunday 16th June around 6:30pm adding that they were also served on Monday morning which is he said was a short notice.
However, the Presiding Judge Salihu Shuaibu adjourned sitting to 1st July, 2019 for Pre-hearing on the petition.
