The Heamatology and Blood Transfusion Department of the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), in collaboration with Medical Women Association of Nigeria has joined the world in celebrating this year’s World Blood Donor Day
Speaking at the occasion held at the University Love Garden, the Head of Department, Dr. AbdulAzeez Hassan said the World Health Organization has set every 14th of June as the world Blood day to appreciate blood donors all over the world especially those that donated blood voluntarily.
According to him, 14th June is the birthday of the person that discovered blood group and genotypes.
Dr. Hassan said the main challenge is lack of volunteers to donate blood but only one per cent of the Nigerian population are donating.
The Head of Department further said that if Nigeria can get five per cent of its population to donate blood willingly, the problems would be solved.
He said, as professionals, they discouraged those who are selling their blood because of its sensitivity, they are not as safe as voluntary donors.
Also shedding more light on the blood donor day, Dr. Ali Waziri said that they have began a massive awareness enlightenment campaign to the general public through the media.
He advised people to always check their health wisely before going in to marriage particularly the genotype.
Dr. Waziri called on the general public to appreciate their efforts by donating blood to assist the less privileged and sickle cell victims.
