Delay In Investigation: An Albatross To Justice Dispensation – Niger CJ

Delay in investigation by Police in criminal cases is an albatross to the rights of suspects and a gross set back to speedy dispensation of justice.
Acting Chief Judge of Niger State, Justice Ahmed Alhaji Bima said in his position paper at a one day workshop organized by the Niger State chapter of the Nigeria Bar Association, (NBA) held in Minna, the state capital.
At the workshop which was supported by the MacAuthur Foundation, the Niger state Acting Chief Judge, argued that delay in investigations was a violation of the rights of suspect and an infringement of the on concept of justice and of dividual’s rights to free and fairness in justice delivery.
Justice Bima therefore enjoined the Police, Ministry of Justice and Counsels to always speed up investigations particularly on criminal cases and bring to book anyone standing trial before any law court.
Represented by Barrister Aisha Bawa at the occasion, Justice Ahmed A. Bima said criminal justice dispensation in true justice, requires that constraints and gridlocks to justice should be eliminated to guarantee fairness, justice and uprightness.
The outgoing Niger state Attorney General and Commisssioner of Justice, Barrister Nasara Dan-mallam said in his remarks at the occasion that the Niger state Ministry of Justice was at the verge of concluding works to ensure that administration of criminal justice act in the state was fully enshrined, laid and codified.
Chairman of the Minna branch of the NBA, Barr. Gimba Mohammed said the theme of the workshop “legislative advocacy and sensitization on promoting the domestication and implementation of the administration of criminal justice act” was a draft bill in the making.
Barr. Gimba Mohammed disclosed that as soon as the draft bill was ready, it would be transmitted to the state legislature for deliberation and legislation.
He urged the state Chief Judge to review downward the fees charge on litigants and lawyers by courts in the state in the interest farness and growth, saying that the increase in the fees were too high.
