Donkey skins estimated at 15 billion Naira has been confiscated by operatives of the Federal Operation Unit (FOU) Zone ‘A’ Ikeja Lagos of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS).
The prohibited items, dried, clinically rapped and concealed in two containers, were uncovered by the eagle eye operatives at a location in Lagos.
Controller of the unit, Comptroller Aliyu Mohammed, while confirming the seizure at a media briefing said the animal skin were discovered at a location where they were being dried for export .
He however declined to disclose the actual area where the goods were seized, saying it capable of jeopardising on-going investigations and efforts to make more seizures and arrest suspects connected with it.
The Controller informed that the item falls under the categories of goods prohibited from exportation in order to prevent the animals from extinction.
Mohammed however said the Unit has launched a manhunt for those behind the illegal activities with a view to arrest and prosecute them.
“We have seized the skin in two containers. As you can see, this is massive. One can only imagine how many donkeys have been killed to have this large number of donkey skin in two containers.
”We didn’t see the meat and it is possible they are being sold out to people as beef. As customs Officers, we are going beyond duty collection to protect lives of people.
”This seizure is part of our effort to prevent the mass killing of donkeys and discourage people from seeing it as a business opportunity.
