The Executive Director National Animal Production Research Institute ( NAPRI) Shika, Prof Clarence A. Mawo Lakpini has said, their linkage with other strategic national bodies is to transform the livestock subsector with a view to improve the productivity of animals and enhancing the livelihood of the rearers.
He stated this at the NAPRI Open Day, where he said in their journey they are working with and acknowledge the Miyetti Allah, the National Commission for Nomadic Education, National Directorate of Employment among others.
According to him, the traditional husbandry practiced by postroralists is not sustainable, considering the limiting available land and biomass resources which are the contending causes of the Herdsmen/Farmers conflict resolution in colossal loss of lives and property.
He said NAPRI in partnership with the Central Bank of Nigeria has trained stakeholders in livestock production and processing towards transforming the livestock subsector.
On the collaboration, the Director said the Institute has in collaboration with Fodder Green Technologies Ltd, is exploring ways and means of commercializing NAPRI products.
“The Vice Chancellor ABU Zaria has graciously approved 600 hectares of NAPRI land the Institute integrated model farm”.
Prof Lakpini said the vision is to produce commercial milk and products, beef, mutton, chvon, poultry meat and eggs under intensive zero grazing system of management on 150 hectares and with guarantee off-takers while the balance of 450 hectares will be cultivated intensely to produce pastures and posture seed year round under irrigation.
“The waste from the animals will be managed to produce biogas for domestic use and organic fertilizer”.
The Director appreciated the the Royal Embassy of Hungary in Nigeria for it’s assistance to NAPRI in it’s attempt to get two lines of Grandparent stock from Balbona Tetra in Hungary for further development of Shika Brown layer chicken for about 15 years.
