Primary school teachers across Oyo State on Monday embarked on an indefinite strike over alleged  delay in payment of salaries of public primary school teachers by the state government.

Following the strike, teachers in primary schools across the state completely stayed away from their schools thereby making pupils that arrived the schools early enough were asked to go back home.

Oyo State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Samson Adedoyin while speaking said the strike became necessary in view of the delay in payment of salaries of public primary school teachers as well as the  failure of the state government to meet other requests of the striking teachers.

The NUT Chairman stressed that there was no other option left for the union than to call for the strike claiming that it was glaring that the state government cannot  meet most of their demands.

In compliance with the strike, as at 8am, most of the public primary schools in the state were shut with the striking teachers sending back the pupils from their various schools.

New Nigerian visit to public primary schools in Ibadan such as Mokola, Oniyanrin,  NTA Ibadan area, Okepadre, Isale Ijebu, Bode and Molete, Labo, Gege, Ijokodo, Apete , academic activities were completely paralysed in all  primary schools in the area .

Comrade Adedoyin however said “NUT is not ready to called off the strike until the government meet the demands of primary school teachers in the state.

“It is when the government is ready to meet our demands. It all depends on the government. If the government is ready to meet our demands, we are ready to suspend the strike”. he said
