Veteran Journalist Unimke Nawa Laid To Rest, NUJ Awards Scholarship To Son

A veteran journalist, and former chairman of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Cross River State Council, late Unimke Columbus Nawa has been laid to rest in his home town Ukelle Obudu in Obudu Local Government Area of Cross River State.

Unimke, until his sudden demise, he was a former General Manager of the state owned newspaper, The Nigerian Chronicle stables.

He also worked as a state Correspondent of the defunct National Concord Newspapers and the Publisher of a local tabloid – The Eagle Newspaper.

Unimke died on March 1st, 2019, after undergoing an operation in a Lagos hospital.

Speaking at the graveyard, the Cross River State chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Comrade Victor Udu, x-rayed the enormous contributions of late Unimke towards the upliftment of journalism profession in the state and the country at large.

He described him as “a mentor, teacher, brother and a down to earth journalist who knew his onions as far as the journalism profession was concerned”.

Udu announced a scholarship award to his first son who is in JSS 3, on behalf of the state council of NUJ.

He prayed God Almighty to grant his soul a resting place in His bosom and also give his family the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.

The State Council, he said would liaise with the secondary school board to ensure his smooth transition while the scholarship lasts.

Unimke died at the age of 61 years and is survived by his wife, three daughters and two sons to mourn with.

Performing the burial rites, Rev. Fr. Afelamse Linus of Roman Catholic Mission, Udigie Obudu, prayed for the repose of his soul.
