Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has emerged winner in Akwa Ibom State, sweeping both governorship and state House of Assembly seats in the elections conducted by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) last Saturday.
PDP which contested the polls against 50 other political parties including its major opposition, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has Governor Udom Emmanuel reelected for second term in office while also holding tight to the 26-member state of assembly.
The Returning Officer for 2019 governorship elections in the state, Prof. Prof. Faradey Orumwensi said Governor Emmanuel pulled a total of 519,712 votes against other parties to emerge the winner.
His words, “Udom Emmanuel of PDP having satisfied the requirements of the law and scored the highest number of votes is hereby declared winner and returned elected.”
Prof. Orumwensi said APC which has Obong Nsima Ekere as the governorship candidate pulled a total of 171,978 votes while other parties recorded less than 300 Votes respectively from the exercise.
According to Prof. Orumwensi who is also the Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin, the total number of registered voters for the governorship elections in the state stood at 2,109,727 while 712,037 was total number of votes cast, and 14792 votes were rejected.
Commenting on the results of the elections in the state, the PDP agent, Bar. Emmanuel Enoidem described the exercise as the most peaceful and credible elections ever done in the state.
“PDP has never in the history of the state recorded such magnificent number of votes as it has made in this 2019 general elections,” Enoidem said.
Enoidem who is also the national legal adviser of PDP said the reelection of Governor Emmanuel into office and the victory that the PDP has recorded in the state from the just concluded elections showed the level of confidence that people of the state has in the party.
He however thanked the people for the confident reposed in the party by coming out to vote massively for victory the party in all the elections.
Other agents of the various parties who were at the state collation center in the state during the final announcement of the results at INEC secretariat in Uyo, signed and accepted the outcome of the exercise in the state except APC agent, Bishop Samuel Akpan who rejected it on behalf of his party.
His ground was that the conducts of the 2019 general elections in the state was marred by irregularities, adding that his party, APC would challenge the results of the elections at the tribunal.
Meanwhile, spontaneous jubilation by people across the state trailed the results of the elections, describing the victory of PDP as the will of God for the state.
