Engagements facilitated by the Partnership to Engage, Reform and Learn (PERL) contributed immensely to the review of Kaduna State education policy.
Consultant to PERL, Hadiza Umar expressed this during a training titled, ‘Media Engagement to Strengthen the Understanding of Media on Education Policies and Practices Towards Building Public Confidence and Trust on the School System in Kaduna State’ at the opening ceremony on Wednesday March 6 in Kaduna.
in a presentation titled, ‘Role Of Media In Implementation Of The Partnership Fund’ she said PERL’s engagements and activities have been successful.
She explained that some other successful engagements recorded were Initial fact finding with SBMC/PTA CS, Media, traditional institutions, Public policy dialogue across 23 LGAs, State-level public policy dialogue, Contributions to review of Kaduna State education policy, Training for education stakeholders as trainers as school level accountability mechanism and Development and validation of the education policy, strategic plan and QA Policy on education.
Hadiza said that they are focusing on Media engagement because they realized that a lot that has been achieved by PERL has been in the shadows because media was not adequately engaged.
She listed reasons for the media engagement to include, the fact that media is important because it is the fourth estate of the realm.
Still on why they embarked on the engagement, she said that media is the Guardian of public interest.
“Serves as bridge between the government and the citizens to keep the democratic.
“Plays watch dog role in ensuring that government is responsible and accountable to people by keeping surveillance on implementation of planned public policies.
“Broadening civic conversion discourse on plans, public sector reform issues and policies and budgets by increasing the number of traditional media and social to productively engage governance with special focus on improved service delivery blockages in prioritized sectors of health, agriculture and education,” she added.
