A leading quality beer brand(Trophy Lager), and one of the national treasures of International Breweries PLC, has announced plans to organise a football tournament for lovers of their product called ” Trophy 5- a- side Field of Honour”.
The launch which took place at the Fun Turf, Lekkk, Lagos, marks the beginning of a 10-week football tournament organised by International Breweries, makers of Trophy Lager Beer.
The maiden edition of the competition is expected to cover four states namely; Lagos, Ogun, Osun and Oyo states with the winning team going home with N3 million and qualify for an all expenses paid trip to Tanzania to represent the country at the continental finals which will attract teams from Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa and the host country, Tanzania.
In her remarks, Marketing Director of of the company. Tolulope Adegoke stated that they are organising the competition as part of its corporate social responsibility function with the aim of discovering talents at the grassroots and giving them opportunity to excel in the game of football.
According to her, the target of the company is to recruit more than 1, 000 players across the states who will be kept busy throughout the duration of the tournament , with a promise that subsequent editions will be spread to other geographical zones of the country.
” This is just the maiden edition and we want to use the South West as the starting point but by the time we go for subsequent editions. we will cover all the other geopolitical zones.
” But this does not mean that only players in South West will be part of the competition as it is open to everybody, both professional and amateur teams”, she explained.
She announced that the tournament will start with a round robin game which will produce the best 32 teams, with the teams reduced to 8 at the knockout stage before the third place and the final games will be decided in May this year even as she stated that there will be a super fans selection from all the states of the Federation. with the winner having an all expenses paid trio to Tanzania to wat h the continental finals.
Adegoke while explaining that the tournament is open to all players from 18 years and above advised interested teams to visit the company’s website and social media platforms for registration.
Earlier in her speech, President of West African International Breweries, Annabelle Degnot said the company decided to organise the tournament as a recognition of the country’s passion for football which she said made Nigeria unique.
‘ Nigerians are very passionate about football and whenever the country is playing, they forget their ethnic, religious and tribal sentiments and as a company serious with its social corporate responsibility function, we found it necessary to empower and develop Tue youths through football and that is why we’ re organising this competition”, she stated.
Meanwhile the company has unveiled former Super Eagles Captain, Joseph Yobo, Nollywood actors,Femi Adebayo Salami and musician Femi Folarin Faltz as ambassadors of the tournament.
In their acceptance speeches, the trio commended the company for identifying with football development in the country noting that they look forward to seeing future stars and national team players emerge from the competition.
