PDP Insists Imo West Senatorial Elections Characterized By Lawlessness, Intimidation

The Executive Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Imo
West Senatorial District, has categorically maintained that the
election from where the state Governor, Chief Rochas Okorocha, was
declared winner was characterized by massive lawlessness and
intimidation.

According to the leadership of the party, it’s candidate Mr. Jones
Onyereri, won the said election and should be returned by INEC.

In a communiqué, issued by the party, at the end of it’s meeting the
leadership of the party, condemned what it described as “brigandage and barbarism” allegedly unleashed on voters by the Governor Rochas Okorocha.

The communiqué signed by the zonal chairman of the party Mr. Aloy
Igwe, further stated that, lawlessness, massive rigging, vote buying,
snatching of ballot boxes, intimidation of voters and INEC staff at
the collation centers using security agents engulfed the election.

It further said, “The election was worst in the history of elections
in the district in the past years”. Pointing out that the party has to
reject the result because of the irregularities noticed during and
election and the party leadership accused the state Governor, Okorocha
of using an Assistant Commissioner of police his former ADC and
soldiers to intimidate people to rig the election in his favour.

In another development, a group know as “concerned indigenes of Owerri
North LGA Imo State,” have raised alarm, over a plot to kill Prof.
Innocent Ibeawuchi, the electoral officer who said he declared
Governor Okorocha as the winner of the Imo west senatorial election
under duress.

Addressing the press in Uratta-Owerri, the president of the group
Barr. Chinedu Mezu said strange callers have been coming to the prof’s
house patrolling around the premises, asking about the ware about of
the Prof.

Barr. Mezu said following this unhealthy development, the returning
officer had fled his house for fear of being killed.

He therefore called on the police, DSS and other security agencies in
the state to help save the returning officer whom he said did the work
as a patriotic Nigerian.
