The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State on Wednesday raised alarm of an alleged threat, intimidation, and pressure by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on the top echelon of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC:) in Oyo State  “to do their unlawful biddings”.

APC raised the alarm in Ibadan at a press conference addressed by the PDP Presidential campaign Coordinator for Oyo state, Dr Nuremi Aderemi Adeniran  held at the Omituntun House campaign office of the PDP governorship candidate in the state. Engineer Seyi Makinde

Dr Adeniran alleged that “APC through the Governor , Senator Abiola Ajimobi was alleged to have approached Resident Electoral Commissioner in Oyo state, Barrister Mutiu Agboke to do their bidding and was harnessed and threatened that if he does not do their bidding, he would ensure he is transferred out of Oyo state”.

“The popular Maxim says ” He that comes to equity must come with clean hands”. As a party , we do not cry foul where there is none. However, it has been brought to our attention that the ruling party, APC has been threatening, intimidating and pressurizing the top echelon of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to do their unlawful biddings,” he said.

According to the PDP Presidential campaign Coordinator in Oyo state, “contrary to the directive that sensitive election materials should be returned to CBN,” the governor allegedly “insisted it should be returned to government house” saying, “,although it was resisted by INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, Barrister Mutiu Agboke. The fact that the effort was made by the Governor makes it bad enough for our democracy at this auspicious time”.

The party however asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in Oyo state, the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Barrister Mutiu Agboke and other INEC staff not to  succumb to pressures from the ruling APC to change the possible outcome of the Saturday’s elections.

Dr Adeniran stressed that the need to raise the alarm was necessary in order to avoid a situation whereby  the results of the rescheduled elections would be altered, saying, ”
the essence of this press conference is to raise the alarm. We don’t want a situation where the ruling party, APC will intimidate or harass INEC officials or REC to change the will of the people.”

“We hereby call on the staff and the  Resident Electoral Commissioner in Oyo state and other relevant agencies who are saddled with one responsibility or the other for the forthcoming elections not to succumb to pressure from the ruling party or any one at all to carry out any illegal and untoward practices that could change the will of the people which can truncate our fledging democracy.”

Dr Adeniran pointed out that “what the people want should play out. Electoral processes must take place as stated. We can’t completely keep quiet.
