With less than five months to the 2019 AFCON finals in Egypt, ex- international, Loveday Omoruyi has advised the NFF to ensure early preparation ahead of the continental showpiece.
He told New Nigerian Sports that the decision to organise friendly match with the Pharaohs of Egypt is a welcome development , it is equally necessary to organise more Grade A friendly matches for the team to enable Gernot Rohr and his assistants have a good assessment of the team before hostilities begins in the North African country.
” I know that many people will say that we still have enough time to blend the team before the June kick off date of the competition but I want the NFF to understand that there is nothing wrong with early preparation for the tournament because fire brigade approach has never benefited our football “, began the former Stationery Stores and Bendel Insurance defender.
” Kudos must go to the NFF for lining up some friendly matches with the national team and I want to see the team playing more grade A friendly games as that is the only way the coaching crew will discover loopholes in the team and make amends”, stressed the one time Julius Berger and Plateau Utd player.
On the neglect of home based players in preference for their foreign based counterparts, Omoruyi who has handled almost all the top teams in the country, advised the Greco- German handler of the national team to always visit league venues to select some good players that will be invited to the national team.
” It’ s worrisome that the national team handler does not believe in home based players. For a national team to be strong and achieve success, there must be a combination of home and foreign based players.
” All I want Rohr and his assistants to do is to visit our league venues and I can assure them that they will discover quality players in the domestic league” , he concluded.
