Zamfara State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Alhaji Bello Mohammed Matawalle has assured of abolishing the State Local Government Joint Account, if elected governor in March.
Matawalle gave the assurance during his campaign rally in Bakura Local Government Area in continuation of his statewide campaign tour.
The PDP governorship candidate said the joint account is detrimental to the local councils therefore the abolishment of the Joint Account will enable the local government councils to have direct access and control over the resources belonging to individual local government area.
“Our concern was to have accelerated development at grassroots, we therefore, ought allow local government officials to handle their finances”, he said.
Matawalle said due to the operation of joint accounts in the states particularly in Zamfara state the local government treasuries are virtually empty as a result of the joint account.
He lamented that provision social amenities such as health care, water supply and other essential services rendered by local government have ceased due to the strangulation by the state governments.
“We all know reasons behind the creation of local government area is to take government closer to the people at grassroots but the operation of the joint accounts have crippled that”, he said.
He appealed to the electorate to stand to vote for PDP during the general elections to get desired change in governance.
