Osinbajo Commission Lagos-Ibadan Rail Project Phase One February 6

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo

Passenger use of the on-going Lagos-Ibadan Standard Gauge Railway Project will be commissioned by Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, on 6th February, 2019.

Minister of Transportation, Mr. Chibuike Amaechi, made the disclosure during the routine monthly inspection of the project on Friday, 1st  February.

He declared:  Vice President is coming to commission the passenger use of the first phase of the Lagos-Ibadan Standard Railway project from Lagos to Abeokuta, Ogun State.

According to him, the test-run train journey and commissioning will start from Iju in  Lagos State to Abeokuta, Ogun State capital.

“When Vice President rides on the standard railway it will be free for use.  That is, I can travel from Lagos to Abeokuta in less than an hour,” the transportation minister stressed.

Amaechi pointed out that when operational the journey from Iju to Abeokuta will not last for more than 45 minutes.

He said that the two coaches now available on the route will not be enough for passenger traffick that will arise, and, therefore, more coaches are required.

“I have directed that they should get two coaches from Warri because passenger traffic is not expected to be as high as from Lagos to Abeokua,” Amaechi said.

He expressed hope that before the end of June 2019 from Lagos to Abeokuta end of the work will be completed.

The minister was asked to tell the per centage  that has been completed so far of the  1.6 billion Dollars project.  Not being certain of it, he said:  “70 per cent will be too much.”

He expressed satisfaction with the progress of work and performance of the contractor, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC).

“There is a huge improvement.  I am impressed,” he stated.

Amaechi disclosed that agreement is being concluded with General Electric (GE) on the narrow gauge rail line.

“That is why I am going to South Africa on the 4th (of February 2019), the minister explained in answer to a question.
