The Ibadan High Chiefs elevated to beaded crown wearing Oba status by Governor Abiola Ajimobi last year August on Sunday stayed away from reception organized to mark the 90th birthday of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Adetunji.
However, the the reception was attended by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Governor Abiola Ajimobi, his wife, Mrs. Florence Ajimobi; former governor of the state, Otunba Adebayo Alao – Akala; and former Senate Majority Leader, Senator Teslim Folarin.
Sources close to the Olubadan palace hinted that absence of the Ibadan High Chiefs were absent at the ceremony was a clear signal that the crisis over the review of the 1957 Declaration of the
Olubadan Chieftaincy Laws by the state government was far from been amicably resolved.
Governor Abiola Ajimobi while speaking at the reception held at the International Conference Centre of the university of Ibadan, disclosed that he would ensure that the N800 Music House, belonging to popular gospel musician, Dr Yinka Adefele partially demolished last Sunday by the Oyo state government is repaired .
The governor emphasized that, if not for anything ,he would not want enemies of his government to capitalise on the partial demolition of the Fresh FM Music House building to tarnish the good deeds of his government.
Governor Ajimobi who emphasized that he has no issue with Dr Ayefele again since last Thursday when a reconciliatory meeting was held said his government went against Ayefele for violating town planning law, insisted that the only way to avoid face – off with the law is for every citizen to be law – abiding.
While wishing Oba Adetunji well, the governor described him as a loving , amiable father and prayed for longevity on the throne .
Chairman of the Olubadan 90th birthday planning committee,
Professor Taoheed Adedoja, in his welcome address declared that one of the lessons of the Oba Adetunji birthday celebration is that “the Yoruba tradition which the Olubadan represents, should be preserved, respected and protected”.
President General of the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII) Chief Yemi Soladoye while speaking described Oba Adetunji as a unique ruler , and prayed for good health and many more years of service to humanity.
Chief Soladoye stressed that no stool can be compared to that of Ibadan and no other one in Africa, saying, “we have no ruling house , no sacred crown, no complicated Ifa Oracle Choice and no slave family in a city of warriors”.
On the feud between Oba Adetunji and the elevated Ibadan High Chiefs, the CCII President General urged that the Olubadan should use the occasion of the 90th birthday to ensure that the crisis was resolved before the advent of a new Administration in the state in May 2019.
” The CCII knows that Kabiyesi is not against reforms , but considering the peculiar situation of Ibadan chieftaincy arrangement and identified three areas of – authorization , jurisdiction, and code of conduct must be addressed for any review of the Olubadan chieftaincy law to succeed.”
Prominent among the royal fathers at reception are the Eleruwa of Eruwa, Oba Samuel Adegbola; the Olugbo of Igbo, Oba Obateru Akirintan; and the Obanikoro of Lagos, who represented the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akinolu.
