Obosi community in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra is currently sitting on edge following the disappearance of three suspected armed robbers, apprehended in Army uniforms who were earlier arrested by the community’s vigilante group at Little Woods Estate in the area.
New Nigerian reporter gathered that two suspects, Olisa Dominic,18 and Friday Nwali, 19, both from Ebonyi State and their counterpart, Nwanosike Isaac from Imo State were arrested while they were preparing to strike with matchetes.
It was learnt that after their arrest, they were allegedly handed over to Obosi Youth Vanquard, a youth
organization established to help rid the community of criminals for transfer to the police in Ogidi.
But according to the President of the youth organisation, Comrade Gil Oluchukwu Anyaoku who spoke to journalists, he said that though the suspects were handed over to his group, that only the police could give account of the whereabouts of the three suspects.
His said, “On that fateful day, being 17th of August, 2018, I was at my work place when I received a phone call from somebody at Little Wood Estate, that Vigilante group there apprehended three criminals on Army uniform as they were about to rob. I told him that I could not make it based on the nature
of my work.
“I had to call my Vice, Chimezie Ononwu, who came and picked the suspects to the community town hall in readiness for transfer to the Ogidi Area Command because we do not have confidence in the Obosi police personnel especially the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, Mr. Usman Ibrahim.
“As the suspects were kept at the hall waiting for the handover to the Ogidi Police Area Command, the Police from Obosi led by one Sergent Overt came with some boys and took the suspects to Obosi Police Station and since then we don’t known their whereabout.
“It is the Obosi Police that will tell the whereabout of the suspects. We are a non violent group and do not want to have any misunderstanding with the police and that was why we handed over the suspects to them.
“It is left for the Police at Obosi to tell the people, the public and the world the whereabout of the Army uniformed three suspects arrested with cutlasses. They have to produce the suspects.”
In his reaction, the President General of the community, Dan Igbokwubili, said that the sudden disappearance of the arrested suspects was a calculated attempt and conspiracy by the DPO and other bigwigs in the community to avert justice.
“They use non indigenes to perpetuate crime in the community and in this case we are not going to rest until the suspects are brought out to face justice”, he added.
When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr. Haruna Mohammed said the DPO of Obosi when contacted denied Knowledge of the arrest, but the state Commissioner of Police, Mr.
Garba Umar, said that he has directed that immediate
investigation be carried out on the matter.
