The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) including all it’s aspirants for various public elective offices for next general elections in Nigeria must resolutely resist the temptations to fall into the same trap which led to the party’s ouster and lost of the number one position as the governing party in the country.
Former Military President Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida gave this charge in a special message to the party. He said the PDP must ensure that instances of impunity, injustice and disrespect to rule of law, party constitution and any act of lawlessness by it’s leadership and members were addressed and eliminated promptly.
Babangida advised the leadership of the party to ensure free and credible primary elections ahead of the 2019 general elections as prelude to returning the party to it’s lost glory.
In a message, the former military President noted that all aspirants for various political offices must consider the supremacy of the party and avoid politics of bitterness, rancor and hostility.
He cautioned that all politicians must not do anything to push down the party to the abyss again stressing that contest in any election should not be a do or die affair.
Babangida’s message which was however not directed at anyone in particular, implored the members of the party to be reasonably disposed in unity to wrestle power from the governing All Progressive Congress at both states and federal levels.
He said only a free and credible primary elections could guarantee a rancour free party that would go into the general elections as a united entity without any blemish.
Babangida who is a father figure in the PDP and is widely consulted by all and sundry over the way forward, said the party should learn from it’s past mistakes and pitfalls to avoid a second but disastrous fall.
General Babangida noted that if the PDP must clinch power at the centre, it must work on it’s fold and guard against acts that could tarnish it’s efforts at rebuilding the party ahead of the 2019 general elections.
He therefore tasked members of the party across the country to be mindful of the serious task ahead and avoid crisis and controversies that could rubbish the party.
”We must learn from the mistakes which led to the defeat of the party in 2015 general elections” he cautioned.
The former military President counseled all politicians in the party with ambition to tailor their zeal along accepted norms without any grandstanding or pull him down machinations.
It would be recalled that in the last two weeks, several politicians aspiring to get the party’s tickets for various political offices ahead of the party’s primary election for the 2019 general elections have visited the former leader to enlist his support and blessings.
Former governors of Sokoto state, Bafarawa and his erstwhile colleague from Jigawa state, Sule Lamido were earlier this week in Minna and visited Babangida at his Hilltop residence.
Lamido was quoted as saying that he was more eminently qualified to be Nigeria’s next president. He said the planned change of PDP’s name was unnecessary and asked those clamouring for the change in name to look elsewhere.
