As preparations for 2019 general elections gathered momentum, women in Akwa Ibom state, today, re-echoed their unalloyed support for the re-election of Governor Udom Emmanuel for second term in office. The event is not unconnected with recent defection of the former senate minority leader and former of governor the state, Senator Godswill Akpabio from PDP to All Progressives Congress (APC), an action that has generated un-savouring political hit in the state.
In what could be described as the biggest rally by women in the state in recent time, featured no fewer than 10,000 women drawn from the 329 political wards of the state.
After moving in a carnival float vehicles carrying banners along major roads in Uyo, the state capital, dressed in various uniforms depicting the event, they later stormed government house banquet hall ground where they were received by the Governor Emmanuel, flanged by stalwarts of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)
Leading the women, the commissioner for women affairs and social welfare, Mrs. Glory Edet said the converged was to confer to Governor Emmanuel that women were not deterred by the political development in the state, adding that their decision to stand by him to continue in office beyond 2019 was total.
Her words, “Your Excellency, we have come to reassure you that come 2019; you are the only candidate for governorship election in this state. As you are aware, we had already declared that we will vote for you to be our Governor for another four years, this position we will not go back. Women are the majority in this state, therefore no shaky.
“Between 1999 and 2007 we voted for Obong Victor Attah from Uyo senatorial district who served as our Governor for eight years; and in 2007 to 2015, we voted Chief Godswill Akpabio from Ikot Ekpene senatorial district who also served for eight years. Now is the turn of Eket senatorial district where you are from, justice and equity demand that you must serve as Governor for eight years.
Besides, you have made us to be free and sleep well with our two eyes close. Your numerous achievements so far in just three years have made us proud,” Mrs. Edet stated.
Supporting the position, the former member who represented Itu state constituency in the state house of assembly, Mrs. Ekaette Ebong Okon spoke on behalf of women in Uyo senatorial district; former local government chairman of Ika local government council, Mrs. Iniibehe Silas spoke for women in Ikot Ekpene senatorial district while wife of the former paramount ruler of Onna, Akwa Obonganwan Patience Ukpa spoke for those in Eket senatorial district.
Responding, Governor Udom Emmanuel and his wife, Martha thanked the women and described their action as a show of solidarity and love.
The Governor reiterated his commitment to the development of the state, adding that his passion to industrialize the state and better the lots of all, called for maximum support from all.
