Not fewer than four people were said to have died in Gidan Goga district in Maradun Local Government Area of Zamfara State after a boat ferrying them capsized mid river.
According to the chairman of the local government area, Alhaji Yahaya Shehu Maradun the victims were mostly kids and had been buried in their communities.
He said the canoe mishap happened when they were trying to cross a river and the water level rose after a heavy downpour causing the canoe to go adrift.
Another eye witness said the victims were fleeing their community after a levy was imposed on them by suspected armed bandits and cattle rustlers.
“You know a levy is being imposed on the communities by armed bandits as precondition to avoid attacks, and when the residents learnt that they could not pay the money they decided to flee the community. Some of them died trying to cross a river,” he added.
Gidan Goga district is one of the areas hit hard by the activities of armed bandits as more than 50 persons were killed in two separate attacks in May and July this year.
