The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Bauchi has approved the timetable and schedule of activities for the conduct of bye-election into the Bauchi South senatorial seat billed for August 11, 2018.
The Bauchi South Senatorial seat became following the demise of Senator Ali Wakili who passed away on Saturday, March 17, 2018 in Abuja after a brief illness.
The bye-election into the senatorial vacant seat is in conformity with section 76 (2) and 25 (2) of the Electoral Act which mandated INEC to fill the vacuum within 30 days following the declaration of the seat vacant by the Senate of the Republic of Nigeria.
the press in Bauchi Friday on the approved bye-election timetable, INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi said that the commission received a letter from the senate on July 13, 2018 declaring Bauchi South senatorial seat vacant.
Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi therefore gave Thursday, July 19, 2018 as the day of service of notice for the bye-election, and Wednesday 25th July, 2018 as last day for the conduct of primaries by political parties.
“Submission of form CF 001, CF 002 and nomination forms must be done by Friday, 27th July, 2018, and publication of forms CF 001 list of nominated candidates and submission of names must be conducted by party agents on Friday 3rd August, 2018”, REC said.
The commissioner said that campaigns are expected to end on Thursday, 9th August, 2018 to pave way for the bye-election in next 48 hours which is 11th August, 2018.
He urged political parties, politicians and the electorates to conduct themselves within the ambit of the law so as to ensure the conduct of a free, fair and credible elections.
Abdullahi explained that activities lining up for the bye-election are in conformity with sections 30 (3), 31 (1)-(3), 45 (1), 76 (1), 87, 99 (1) of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended).
