Mai Bade wins Kaduna Speaker Veteran’s Badminton Championship

Mai Bade Badminton club have emerged winners of the maiden edition of the Kaduna State Speaker’s Veterans Badminton Championship, which final was decided on Sunday at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua Indoor Sports Complex, Murtala Square, Kaduna.

Mai Bade team featuring the Emir of Bade, Alhaji Umaru Ibn Suleiman and his teammate, Daniel, beat  NDA Club 2-0 to win the 51 years and above category.

The tied third position went to Exclusive Badminton Club Kaduna (EBCK) and City Gate Badminton Club.

In the 40-50 years category, Adamawa Club clinched the top spot after beating  Noble Veterans Zaria 2-1, leaving EBCK and Bayero University Kano (BUK) to tie at the  third spot in that category.

The most interesting category, Mixed Doubles Category saw Zuma finish top after thrashing City Gate in two straight sets.

Friendship Badminton Club and another pair from City Gate tied at the third position.

Speaking to newsmen after the presentation to winners, sponsor of the championship, Imran Usman Jibrin; Dan Makwoyo Nasarawa said that 239 players from 24 clubs participated.

He said that twelve of the clubs featured from Kaduna State, while the other twelve, came from clubs scattered all over Nigeria.

Speaking further, he explained that it was organized to rekindle the interest in the sport in particular, and sports in general.

The sponsor said that though they had some challenges, they have learnt from this maiden edition, optimistic that next year’s edition will be bigger, better and attract sponsorship from public spirited individuals and corporate organizations.

“We only got some support from Airtel who provided souvenirs, while assuring that next year they will come in a bigger way. We also believe that more sponsors will come on board because several are indicating interest,” he added.

The Dan Makwoyo Nasarawa who is also the Chairman of the Arewa Badminton Club, assured that it would be an annual event.

The three day championship attracted 40 officials, and saw the presentation of trophies, prizes and medals to winners, while all participants were presented certificates.
