Southern Kaduna: Balat Foundation to encourage education through sports By; Jacob Onjewu Dickson The Isaiah Balat Foundation is at the final stage of sealing partnership pact with the Basketball For Peace (BB4P) which is aimed at upping the grades of students, using their grades in school as a criteria for participating in competitions. Adamu Balat who spoke on behalf of the foundation to newsmen in Zaria during the 2015 BB4P National Championship, explained that he was not comfortable with the present standard of education in the area, hence the conception of the initiative. He explained that in the United States of America where he schooled, sports is used in attracting students to performing better, a model he appreciates and is willing to replicate in Southern Kaduna. “In partnership with BB4P, we are trying to get students interested in their education, by ensuring a minimum grade target is set for those to participate in the competitions. “In that way, we would get the students to be interested in sports, while at the same time pushing them to study hard,” Balat emphasized. He noted that though not everyone can become an Einstein in the future, the initiative will make them work harder and understand the basics in education. “We also have plans of encouraging their schools to provide them with extra lessons that would give them an edge over their peers that don’t have such opportunities,” he assured. Balat also explained that in no distant future, the foundation would be providing scholarship for the students that distinguish themselves through funds they would attract from donors. The partnership according to him would be concluded, and the competition would commence before the second quarter of 2016.
