Extend TETFUND to Private Universities ~ Lead City VC

By; Bayo Akamo, Ibadan.

Vice Chancellor of the Lead City University, Ibadan Professor Olufemi Onabajo has charged the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) to contribute to the development of Private Universities in Nigeria.

Professor Onabajo said this at the 10th year Anniversary Press Conference of the institution held at the school international conference centre, Ibadan.

According to him, “it is important for all Nigerians who invest in education regardless of their background to benefit from TETFUND since it is meant for education sector.

“Since the TETFUND is the contribution from the private sectors to education sector in the country, the private universities are also entitle to benefit from it. Secondly, the law that established TETFUND has not been enacted before the establishment of the private universities in Nigeria, so one could understand why private universities were not captured in the law, and thirdly, since most of the students and their parents are Nigerians who are paying their taxes, why will they not benefit from the federal government scheme what their counterpart in the public schools are benefiting? he said.

The Vice Chancellor pointed out that TETFUND will go a long way in improving the education sector in Nigeria  if the federal government recognises private institutions in its policies.

“Nothing wrong if the government decided to build hostels or laboratory for each department as their contribution to the development of education in private schools. Since the government is subsidising education for students in the public schools, why is it not caring about those who are in private schools?”

Professor Onabajo added that there is the need for students to embrace enterprenureship, saying, Lead City University has done a lot to help its products to be independent after they must have left the institution rather than seeking for job.

“Our centre for Enterpreneurship at Lead City University was set up to enhance and train our students on vocational skills based on their interest. At the Centre, Students takes out time to meet with our carefully selected trainers on batik, tied and dye, catering bakery, event decoration, hairstyling, and Spa among others. They are to be certified before graduating on one of the skills of their choice. We also have some of our products which we produce especially at this time of the year as gift items.”
