Leader of the Fulani Community in the South West, Alhaji Haruna Maiyasi, the Sardaunan Yamma has said the Fulani has set up a Surveillance Committee to liaise with the affected farmers and herdsmen to douse tension in the zone.

Alhaji Maiyasin, who is also the Sarkin Sasa of Ibadanland dropped this hint during a meeting between Fulani herdsmen and farmers from Iwo, Osun State, in his Sasa Palace, Ibadan, Oyo State.

According to him, the Surveillance Committee will, as part of its mandate, assess the damages to affected farm holdings by the itinerant Fulani herdsmen and work out the level of commensurate compensation for the victims.

The Sarkin Sasa while emphasizing the need for continuous dialogue between the Fulani herdsmen and farmers as a lasting solution to the recurring crisis frowned at the inflammatory calls from some quarters for reprisal attacks on one another.

He however urged Fulani parents in the zone to be vigilant over their children and wards so as to guard against their engaging in criminal and other anti-social activities.

Speaking, the leader of the visiting team, the Sarkin Hausawa of Iwo, Alhaji Ado Galadima thanked the Sarkin Sasa for convening the meeting and assured that Iwo community would not witness Fulani herdsmen/farmers crisis.

The leader of the Fulani Community in Osun State, Alhaji Suleiman Oluwatoyin lauded Governor Rauf Aregbesola for managing the itinerant Fulani herdsmen in the state.

“At a meeting held with them recently at the instance of the Governor, he gave us assurance of safety of our lives and our cattle and advised us to create a committee that will sit on weekly basis to discuss harmonious relationship with farmers in the host states so that problems will be nipped in the bud without resorting to the Police.”
