Economic downturn: Ekiti HoS urges Labour to shelve undue agitation

The Ekiti State Head of Service, Dr. Olugbenga Faseluka has urged labour unions in the State to show more understanding with the government in view of the present economic realities in the country and shun undue agitation.

Declaring open a two-day retreat for top management staff of local government councils in the state at Ikogosi warm spring resort in Ikogosi-Ekiti, the Head of Service said the country was facing a hard time and it affected the economy of the State; stressing that this was not a time for labour unions to make undue agitations to cause acrimony between the government and workers.

Dr. Faseluka who stated that government would continue to solicit understanding from workers in order to chart a way for the progress and development of the state, asserted that a time like this called for sober reflection from all stakeholders.

According to him, workers everywhere are concerned about their welfare but their main concern should not only be about what they could gain from government but also about their contributions to the growth and development of the State.

“At this very crucial time when resources are dwindling and expectations and demands are increasing, there is the dire need as higher public servants to re-examine our methods and approaches to issues in the public service. The much desired restoration which is the focus of the present administration can only be achieved if there are commitments and concerted efforts by public servants who are saddled with the responsibility of translating government policies and initiatives into realities”, Faseluka said.

In his remarks, the State President of Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Mr. Bunmi Ajimoko noted that the local government system has thrown up challenges on the level of impact it has made both within the system and to the external environment.

Ajimoko expressed worry that the lacuna in the 1999 constitution has been exploited to deprive the third tier of government of its constitutional duties such that it is tied to the apron string of state government.

He stressed the need to stabilize the status of the local government across the nation in line with the expectations of the constitution with particular reference to functions and allocation of resources.
