In its efforts to checkmate the spread of HIV/ AIDS virus, the Adamawa state Agency for  the control of HIV/AIDS (ADSACA)  has upgraded sixty Health facilities across the 21 Local government Areas and trained 130 Health workers for efficiency in the state.
Executive Secretary of the agency, Dr Stephen John, disclosed this development in Yola during the occasion marking this year’s World Aids Day.
According to him, the disease prevalence has dropped from 3.8% in 2010 to 1.9% in 2015 due to intense campaign by the agency and other organisations.
John said the most risk vulnerable groups include commercial sex workers, long distance commercial drivers, in and out of school youths, pregnant women and uniformed service men, adding that, the agency was also able to implement HIV/AIDS prevention activities by four line ministries with funds from World Bank.
He also disclosed that the agency was also funding local action committees on HIV/AIDS in the 21 local governments.
On challenges facing the agency, John said apart from nonpayment of counterpart funding since 2010, the agency has no functional vehicles for routine operation while a significant number of agency staff have been working for over 10 years on temporary basis and needed to be
absorbed into the mainstream civil service.
Also speaking at the occasion, the World Bank Project Manager on HIVAIDS, Dr Mohammed Chubado raised concern over non funding of the agency which he said was posing a threat to effective fight against the scourge.
Chubado lauded World Bank, FHI36 and ANNI for their active support in the fight against HIV/AIDS in the state.
