A move by two women to sell newborn twins in Lagos has landed them in police custody, New Nigerian Newspapers has learnt.

The suspects, identified as Ujunwa Una, and Chinelo Igbechionwu were apprehended over alleged conspiracy and attempt to sell the new born babies.

Our correspondent gathered that the suspects were arrested on their arrival from Abia State by police operatives attached to Ojodu Police Station, stationed at Berger bus-stop, an entry point into Lagos State.

As learnt, the policemen, acting on a tip-off, arrested the two women with the two baby girls who were approximately six-days old,

Confirming the arrest, the spokesperson for Lagos police command, Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed that investigations revealed that the suspects picked up the children from Abia State on September 9, 2024.

Hundeyin, in a statement released on Friday, stated that investigations revealed that the suspects were en route to deliver the babies to a nurse in Lagos State whom the mother of the babies promised to link them up with only after they had arrived in Lagos.

He said: “Upon questioning, the suspects confessed to the crime, stating that they were paid the sum of ₦150,000 for transportation of the babies to Lagos. The suspects added that the mother of the babies sold the babies because she could not give them proper care.

“The case was transferred to the Gender Unit of the Command from where the newborns were placed in the custody of a motherless babies home for proper care and medical evaluation.

“While an investigation is ongoing to arrest other conspirators, the arrested suspects were arraigned on Thursday, September 19, 2024.
