No fewer than ten traders were on Thursday arraigned and convicted by the Oyo State Environmental Court for allegedly violating sanitation and waste management laws in the state.
New Nigerian gathered that the traders were arrested at different locations in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital during the state’s weekly environmental sanitation period (between 8~10am).
The arrested traders were identified as Anita Lateef, Olaiya Usman, Zakariya Abdullahi, Rauadon Thahiru, Yusuf Adamu, Bashiru Mustapha and Ishau Shehu, Aminat Oloyede, Akeem Alade and Anthony Sunday.
While some of the arrested people were charged for street trading others were charged for abating/assaulting the environmental sanitation exercise enforcement team.
Magistrate, Mrs Adetuyibi F. in her judgment declared that the people  were found guilty of the offence and were subsequently sentenced  to one month imprisonment, or pay a fine of N5000 and N7500 .
Magistrate Adetuyibi said the sentence was in accordance with the Oyo state environmental sanitation laws 2013.
Commenting on the arrested traders, Oyo state Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Chief Isaac Ishola maintained that the fines were in line with the state environmental sanitation and waste management laws.
Emphasizing that the  court will be sitting on Tuesdays and Thursdays every week,the Commissioner urged traders and the people of the state in general to comply and support government’s policy in ensuring save and aesthetics environment.
