The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC has threatened to descend on defaulters with arrest and heavy charges as it begins enforcement of the speed limit device come, Feb. 1, 2017 even as members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW said they are heading to court.
However, the FRSC Unit Commander, Pankshin Unit Command, ACC Nnamdi Ikeh-Akabogu, stated this during a stake holders forum to sensitise the driving public on the enforcement of the device next month.
The Unit Commander, who asserted that the Speed Limiter would bring the road crash fatality to zero, warned motorists who are fond of over speeding to beware of the wrath of Corps.
“We are worried over the carnage on our roads and the wanton loss of innocent lives cause by over speeding by reckless drivers and are ready to stop such at all cause.
“The Federal Government resolve to introduce the speed limiter was basically to see that death on our roads are brought to zero level by God’s Grace beginning from next Month,’’ he said.
Ikeh-Akabogu called on all motorists especially commercial drivers to ensure that their vehicles are kitted with device, which he said controls the speed of the vehicles and the drivers
The state chairman of NURTW in jos said arrangement had been concluded to dragged the FRSC to court and challenged the move
He called on the Road safety commission to re visit the policy and abide by the decision of the National Assembly on the issue.
“They must abide by the wishes of the people and consider some of the dangers involved in this matter.“
According to him, armed robbers can over speed a commercial cars to Rob them ” because of the limited speed installed on such vehicle ”.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the occasion and Provost Federal College of Education (FCE) Pankshin, DR Amos Cirfat, thanked the Unit Commander for organizing such a commendable forum that would go a long way in safe guarding the lives of the Nigerian citizens.
Cirfat, who called on the general public to support the laudable project, however called on the Government to cut down the price of the device to enable the common Nigerians afford it since it meant to save lives.
In his good will message, Mr Stephen Jings, the Chairman of Pankshin LGA, represented by Mr. Andrew Damulak, Councillor Works, commended the Unit Commander and his men for the good works of saving lives on the Plateau Central Zone.
Jings called on the citizens of Pankshin to give the Government the desired support to ensure the safety of the citizens on the highways and Pleaded with Government to reduce the price considering the recession currently faced by all Nigerians.
