Zamfara State Police Commissioner, Mr Celestine Okoye has threatened that the command will deal ruthlessly with any one who breaches or disrupts the Saturday governorship/house assembly elections in the state.
Okoye gave the warning on Thursday at the Police Command headquarters in Gusau during the signing of peace accord by governorship candidates for the Saturday election in the state.
“The command has reviewed its security strategies to contending with cases of election violence such as political thuggery, snatching of ballot boxes, use of offensive weapons, hate speeches and any conduct likely to disrupt the process”, he warned.
Okoye added that the command has also reinforced its intelligence gathering mechanism and techniques to have an early warning signal for quick response to distress calls.
He appealed to people of the state to remain law abiding and cooperate with security agencies to provide adequate security and protection for the conduct of free, fair, credible and nonviolent election.
“I want to send a warning signal yo all criminal elements who may wish to perpetrate devilish act, to suspend such actions for a new life or face the full wrath of the law”, he said.
In his response, the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Alhaji Sani Abdullahi Shinkafi tasked the security agencies to be neutral and impartial in their dealings to ensure that peace is achieved during and after the elections.
He however commended the Police Commissioner for taking some proactive measures during the Presidential/national assembly elections which shows that the command can do better if its remains apolitical in carrying out their activities during the elections.
The signing agreement was attended by more than 30 governorship candidates of different political parties in the state.
