Senator representing Kaduna Central Senatorial Zone, Comrade Shehu Sani, has strongly advised that the proposed maiden Para-Soccer tournament being mulled by the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) Kaduna State Chapter be named after  President Muhammadu Buhari or Kaduna Governor, Mall. Nasir El-Rufai as a unifying factor.
Sani, who is the Chairman, Senate Committee on Foreign Debt, gave the suggestion in Kaduna on Monday when the proposal to name the tournament after him by executives of Kaduna SWAN was presented to him during a courtesy visit.
“I am 100% in support of the maiden para-soccer tournament, provided you name it after my President Muhammad Buhari or my friend Governor Nasir El-Rufai.
“We have to separate sports from politics because sports is a unifying factor in our lives,” he added.
He described funding of sports in Nigeria as dismal, hence the need for check and adequate attention by State and Federal Government.
“Sports has been one sector that government has neglected and underfunding due to lack of political will.
“I am also going to float a Football team in Kaduna to contribute more in sports because many do not see value for sports in Nigeria apart from watching premier, European leagues,” Sani said.
Earlier in his remarks, the Vice Chairman and leader of the SWAN executives said the para-soccer is going to be an annual tournament that will make the physically challenged to feel the impact of sports in the state.
He said the tournament is expected to hold in first week of April at Murtala Square, Kaduna.
