The Vice-Chancellor of University of Ibadan, Professor Idowu Olayinka on Tuesday said the institution would require  about N163 million per month to ensure 24hrs uninterrupted power supply to the University.
Professor Olayinka stated this while speaking at the University’s Parents and stakeholders meeting held at the Trenchant Hall of the university.
The Vice Chancellor who noted that the interest of the students remains paramount on the agenda of the Institution’s management quickly added that for the authorities of the University to be able to meet the demands of both the students and workers of the institution more funding will be needed to do so.
He stressed that with the present situation in the University, there was no means by which the authorities of the institution could meet up with the 24-hour uninterrupted power supply as expected by the students.
Speaking further, Professor Olayinka hinted that the University’s Senate can decide the new resumption date for the institution as well as on the demands of the students and the staff, adding that the Senate is to hold its meeting on Thursday this week to decide on the issue.
The Vice Chancellor while saying the university can not alone provide the needs of the over 30,000 students on campus, called on government to increase its funding to the institution and other educational institutions across the country.
The University’s Students Union President, Mr. Olateju Aliu Oladimeji in his remarks advocated for dialogue between the authorities and the students.
Kicking against intimidation and harassment of the students by the management, Oladimeji declared that some of the things the students are demanding for are their rightful belongings which does not warrant intimidation and rustication of students who led the struggles.
A parent, Mr. Ayodele Oluyinka in his own remark advised the institution to look inward and find a way of empowering their business ventures in generating more money for the institution thereby generating money internally.
