UN Women Nigeria in collaboration with UN Global Compact and Nigeria Economic Summit Group (NESG) has forged a strategic partnership with the private sector to support government’s efforts in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030.
The collaboration will emphasize on how to realize gender equality and women empowerment in Nigeria.
The partnership was reached at a Private Sector Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) breakfast meeting which was hosted by UN Women Nigeria Country Office, UN Global Compact and NESG.
The event which took place at Eko Hotel, Lagos on Tuesday 23rd January, 2018 was titled:  “Implementing The Sustainable Development Goals For Women’s Empowerment In Nigeria”
The parley provided unique opportunities for private sector CEOs to share their development priorities and focus areas with UN Women, the media and identify areas of synergy.  It also set the roadmap for designing a strategy for UN Women and private sector long-term collaboration.
On the occasion, Mr. Laoye Jaiyeola, Chief Executive, NESG presented a welcome address.  Ms. Thelma Ekiyor, UN Women Consultant Strategic Policy Adviser, delivered a talk on the topic:  “Overview:  Private Sector and SDGs”, noting that some companies do not know how to structure their programmes towards women empowerment and gender equality.
Others who spoke on the occasion included Ms Comfort Lamptey, UN Women representative to Nigeria and ECOWAS as well as Adejoke Orelope Adefulire, Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammad Buhari on SDGs.
The female gender rights activists released “Women Empowerment Principles (WEPs) Gender Gap Analysis Tools – From Principle to Practice.”   They urged the private sector operators to take the WEPs gender gap analysis tools and see how their companies can accelerate the pace of change for women empowerment and gender equality in Nigeria.
According to them, the tool will enable them assess their companies strategic approach to gender equality, contribute to UN Sustainable Development Goal-5 by investing in   women and girls as well as “making global goals local business.”
