There seems no end in sight on the nationwide strike embarked upon by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) over unfulfilled past agreements by government and underfunding of education as the union’s President, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi on Wednesday charged lecturers in public universities to brace up for a long strike.
Specifically, Professor Ogunyemi in a bulletin tagged ” Strike Bulletin No 5″ sent to all ASUU members , a copy of which was obtained by the New Nigerian in Ibadan asked ASUU members “to be on the watch and prepare for a long drawn out struggle to salvage the University System”.
The ASUU President emphasized that it is now time for all members of the union “to remain steadfast and resolute in the face of intimidation or antics employed by government through Vice chancellors and Governing councils to undermine the ongoing struggle”
Professor Ogunyemi in the bulletin said “Government is yet to change its “keep them talking” style and stance as all the meetings held so far with the Minister of Education are yet to resolve any of the demands of ASUU”.

Chairman University of Ibadan Dr Deji Omole declared that Ibadan zone of ASUU has been fully mobilised with her members to ensure the reason for the strike gets actualised.
The ASUU Chairman maintained that it is regrettable that the federal government who has not put anything on the table for revitalising the comatose education sector is busy mobilising funds for re-election in 2019.
Dr Omole then appealed to parents not to mortgage the future of their children by fighting for proper and adequate funding of public education
