CIVIL servants in Plateau State has given the state Governor, Jonah Jang, a10 day ultimatum to resolve the current impasse between the state government and staff of local government councils in the state and teachers or face mass action.
The organized Labour in Plateau State at a press briefing yesterday in Jos, said that the action would involve all the affiliate unions tom the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) and other bodies.
The industrial dispute involving the Plateau State Government and local government staff on one hand and teachers on the other hand over the implementation of 18,000.00 Naira minimum has been on for the past seven months.
In his address on the development, the Chairman of NLC in the state, Comrade Jibrin Kamga Bancir, said the resolution became necessary because efforts and interventions from all walks of life for the governor to shift ground had failed.
He has explained that in view of this the NLC/TUC at the central working meeting held last Tuesday, November 27, resolved that elder statesmen in the state be consulted to prevail on the state government to end the strike.
Adding that, “10days ultimatum be issued, effective from November 30, to elapse on the midnight of December 9, 2012.”
According to the NLC chairman, if the impasse is not resolved, all workers in the state including private organizations will embark on a total withdrawal of services, leading to general protest in the state.
He, however, appealed to workers in the state to remain resolute, and continue to mobilize for the impending action to occupy various gates of local government councils and local government education authorities (LEAs).
The organized labour, however, called on the state government to have a rethink over the injuries and deaths the strike has inflicted people who voted for the governor.
He stressed that on their part, they were operating an open door policy for a meaningful negotiation and dialogue that would lead to the resolution of the strike.
He also refuted claims by the state government through the state Commissioner for Information and Communication, Yiljap Abraham, that last Tuesday, the organized labour was in Abuja to confer with the opposition on the way forward, describing it as a blatant lie and challenged the state government to prove such false claims.
According to him, on that date, the union leaders in the state were in Mangu Local Government on the invitation of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) to find a lasting solution to the strike.
