THE nationwide one week warning strike embarked upon by Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) has crippled administrative activities at the university of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN).
When our correspondent went round the university yesterday, it was observed that all administrative offices as well as that of the Public Relation officer of the ivory tower were all under lock and key.
Chairman of UNN chapter of the association, Comrade Sylva Ugwuda, who led other executive members of the body in monitoring the strike with a view to ensuring total compliance, told the newsmen that all offices of the institution were under lock and key in compliance with the national directive on the strike.
“We are ensuring that the strike is total in UNN.
“We told our members to relax at home until the warning strike is over,” he told reporters
The chairman however, described the inability of the Federal Government to implement the 2009 agreement reached with SSANU and attempt to treat members of the trade union as workers under Federal Ministry of Education as quite unfortunate.
“It is unfortunate that arrears owned to SSANU were not captured in 2013 budget, saying, parents and students should bear with SSANU “as our demands will make us to serve them better.”
Reacting, National President of SSANU, Comrade Samson Ugwuoke, explained that the one week warning strike would lead to indefinite strike if President Goodluck Jonathan fails to meet the demands of the association.
“It is now clear that government is not telling SSANU the truth, since it failed to capture arrears owned to members in 2013 budget the warning strike may lead to indefinite strike if government did not implement the 2009 agreement as well as stop, the present move to sack many SSANU members in public universities,” he added.
