Niger State Government on Wednesday demonstrated it’s commitment to assist in all collaborative efforts aimed at fighting crime across the state with donations of motorcycles to assist in the fight against criminals especially in areas with difficult and un-naviganable terrains for car patrols.
The state government said it will within the first half of this year assist in equipping the Police Force and Vigilante groups with operational vehicles for effective surveillance in nooks and crannies to checkmate the rising wave of crime and enhance security for lives and property particularly in areas known for their notrieties in criminalities.
The state government has for the start, distributed ninety (90) motorcycles to members of the Vigilante groups in three (3) local government areas in the state.
The council areas are Munya Shiroro and Rafi where cattle rustling, bandits and marauders have held sway in recent past. These three are to benefit under the first phase of the scheme.
Governor Sani Bello explained that government’s decision to purchase and distribute the motorcycles was informed by the inability of regular security agencies and the local vigilantees to track down criminals due to the bad road terrains in most of the rural areas of these councils.
He noted that the challenge in the unmotorablity of most of the roads in rural areas had posed a major hindrance in the fight to rout out criminals who are operating in the interiors of the state.
“We have been having security challenges in rural areas posed by some criminally minded elements. Unfortunately, due to the bad state of our rural roads, our vehicles are not able to get to the forest, the hideouts of such criminals.
“We have therefore decided to provide our security agents and the vigilante groups with rugged motorcycles so that they can reach these areas faced with such serious security issues” Governor Bello said.
He directed Chairmen of the benefiting local government to ensure that the motorcycles were not used for privete/personal purposes. “You have to guard against selling the motorcycles” he warned.
The Chairman, Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, (ALGON), Malam Gambo Tanko who received the motorcycles on behalf of the benefiting councils, assured the motorcycles would be put to judicious use for the purpose they were procured.
The ALGON Chairman commended the state government’s efforts at ensuring security of lives and property in the state. Tanko, is the Chairman of Rafi Local Government.
Each of the three councils received twenty motorcycles for distribution to their vigilante groups while remaining 30 motorcycles are to be distributed to the other security agencies in the state.
