Senator representing Kaduna Central Senatorial Zone, Comrade Shehu Sani has expressed sadness at the treatment meted out to Team Nigeria at the 2016 Rio Olympics Games, describing it as shameful.
In a personal statement on Sunday night, he described the outing as a disgrace to the country.
The social activist and human rights campaigner, added that money channeled into other frivolities could have been used on the welfare of the athletes.
“We must be humble enough to tell ourselves the truth; As a nation and as a government, we have failed our athletes in Rio.
“To hide behind a bronze is to hide behind a finger. Our athletes and Nigerians deserve an unreserved apology and a strong assurance and commitment to do the right thing at the right time in the future.
“Where there is no shame and no remorse, there’s no honour. Our National flag didn’t fly in Rio, it soaked and sagged.
“We have just successfully hosted African Central Bankers in Abuja,we have no reason not to fund our athletes to perform,” he pointed out.
