Oyo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) on Saturday asked the state government to reverse the redeployment of its 22 members from the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS).

The union stated this in a communique issued at the end of its monthly congress held at the council’s Press Center, Ibadan jointly signed by the Communique drafting committee and the council’s Secretary, Comrade Bola Ogunlayi.

Oyo NUJ in the communique declared that the redeployment exercise at the BCOS was ” a deliberate ploy to effect mass sack of the affected.” and part of grand plan to stifle and cripple unionism in the Corporation as principal officers of the main Unions in the organisation, NUJ and RATTAWU, were affected”

“Members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Oyo State Council held its Congress on February 3, 2018 at the Press Centre, Iyaganku, Ibadan and after extensive deliberations resolved that the redeployment exercise just carried out in the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State, (BCOS) was a deliberate ploy to effect mass sack of the affected. That it was also part of grand plan to stifle and cripple unionism in the Corporation as principal officers of the main Unions in the organisation, NUJ and RATTAWU, were affected.”

According to Oyo NUJ in the communique, ” there is need to appeal to the conscience of the Oyo State government and BCOS Management to reverse the decision.”

The union emphasized that ” where redeployment became necessary, journalists should be posted to places where they would be relevant and not redundant.

“What we have at hand is a case of emergency and should be handled as such. The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council will liaise with other Unions, like RATTAWU and the NLC to ensure justice prevailed.”

The council pointed out that ” from investigation, the examination conducted by KPMG, a Consultant charged with the restructuring exercise conducted examinations in areas not relevant to the affected workers.” adding that the time has come for NUJ members to ” always be proactive on issues affecting them and those considered threats to their profession.”
